Airlie Gardens

Established in 1901, Airlie Gardens is a shining example of North Carolina cultural and ecological wonderment. The property was part of a land grant from King George II in 1735 and was eventually acquired by Pembroke and Sarah Jones who transformed the property into one of the most important gardens in the country. By 1920 there were more than a half million azaleas and 5000 camellias. The gardens are under constant preservation and open for public use.

The Airlie Gardens Suite is an intimate corner suite with a Queen sized bed overlooking Second Street and a garden patio below. Enjoy the open air balcony and watch the horse carriages go by from your very own wooden rocking chairs.

Bald Head Island

Bald Head Island is accessible only by ferry and despite the forces of nature it remains much as it was centuries ago. Once occupied by Native Americans, pirates, rum runners and the Confederate Army, today Bald Head is home to America’s oldest lighthouse, “Old Baldy” and a special breed of hardy inhabitants and serves as a refuge to those seeking privacy and relaxation. Figure Eight Island

As recent as the turn of the century Figure Eight Island was home to wild ponies freely galloping along the dunes. It retains its wide beauty as an unspoiled island retreat for those seeking the ultimate in privacy on the North Carolina shore. As a private island with a guarded entry, the island is home to many celebrities and politicians and used as a filming location for many movies and TV shows.

The Figure Eight Island Suite is one of our most private two bedroom suites that includes a King size bedroom and a full size bedroom each with their own private full bath. This suite connects with the Cape Fear Atrium and has partial views of downtown Wilmington and the Cape Fear River. Lumina Station

Lumina Station was a special stop on the Wrightsville Beach trolley that brought dancers, lovers and families alike to the Lumina Pavilion, a “bright oasis for companionship and camaraderie in the 1920s, 1930s and 1940s.” It was truly a grand place where many generations enjoyed an outdoor movie screen and dancing to live performers such as Cab Calloway and Glenn Miller. Today’s Lumina Station is an upscale dining and shopping village at Wrightsville Beach featuring sculptures, garden landscaping and many locally owned boutiques and cafes.

Masonboro Island

Masonboro Island is the largest undisturbed barrier island along the southern part of the North Carolina coast and home to a wide variety of marsh and tidal wildlife including loggerhead and sea turtles, as well as spot, mullet, menhaden and bluefish. Dolphin pods are year round residents of the surrounding waters and the sunrise over the Atlantic is truly spectacular. The island can only be reached by boat and is open to day trips and overnight primitive camping.

Scotts Hill

Scotts Hill is one of the most charming small plantation sites of the old South and home to Poplar Grove Plantation, including a 19th century mansion complete with tenant houses, smokehouse, blacksmith shop, and greenhouse. The expansive property is open to the public and includes a beautiful nature trail around an old mill pond and through ancient woods.

Shell Island

Once an island unto itself, Shell Island now consists of the upper land point and marshes of Wrightsville Beach. With its sprawling expanses of dunes and lovely panoramic views of Mason’s Inlet and Figure Eight Island this stretch of beach is perfect for long walks and dolphin watching. In the 1920’s a resort was built on the island and music provided the biggest attraction at a pavilion designed for dancing and jazz performances.

Shell Island Suite has a King size bed as well as a queen size pull-out sofa. This suite also connects to the Cape Fear Atrium and an open-air balcony with rocking chairs overlooking Second Street and a garden patio below.

Topsail Island

Topsail Island is a long and narrow barrier island located about 20 miles up the coast from Wilmington. Local folklore claims the name (pronounced Tops’l) originated in the 1700’s when pirate ships roamed the coastal waters and only their top sails could be seen. Topsail Island is also home to one of only two sea turtle hospitals and rescue centers in the country. A visit to this remarkable marine center makes for a very special day trip for the entire family.
